The World According to Biomes Curriculum »

The World According to Biomes is the introductory curriculum guide to the biome study that leads to an exploration of each continent by biomes. It begins with the concept of a biome by looking at its parts: the energy from the sun, the water, the soil, the air, the plants, and the animals. Each part of the biome is explored with nomenclature, hands-on activities, movement, drama, and art.

The place to start is with the introductory curriculum entitled “The World According to Biomes”. You can download a pdf version right here along with the masters for making the nomenclature and other materials. It’s free.

You can purchase a printed copy of the curriculum along with the nomenclature including definitions, pictures, and labels ready to laminate below.

This introductory curriculum introduces the concept of a biome by looking at its parts: the energy from the sun, the water, the soil, the air, the plants, and the animals. Each part of the biome is explored with nomenclature, hands-on activities, movement, drama, and art.

Before beginning a study of a continent by biomes, we recommend the Biomes of the World Cards». These language cards explore the eight different biomes used as general categories throughout the curriculum.

Introduction to the Biomes Cards »
Biomes of the World Cards provide a first lesson on the eight different biomes that are used throughout the biome materials. The categories chosen are broad, general, and suited for presentation to young children. In research, you will find such terms as tundra, savannah, boreal forest, and mediterranean scrub which can be investigated later by older children as subcategories or ecosystems within the biome. Each biome has an icon that is found on the back of cards and used to identify different sets or as a control of error.
Biosphere Nesting Boxes »

The Biosphere Nesting Boxes illustrate how a biome relates to the life contained within it. The boxes depict (from largest to smallest):

the galaxy

the solar system

the biosphere (the earth)

the biome

ecosystem

populations of plant and animal species

individual plants or animals

organs and tissues of plants or animals

cells of plants or animals

atoms (picturing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen as the building blocks of life on earth)

Introduce this concept to elementary aged children to use as a research template for exploring different species in the context of their internal and external environments. Other research avenues include the various ecosystems that make up a biome.
